NuVal Nutritional Scoring System Announces Partnership with United Supermarkets, LLC
Revolutionary system promises to change the way we think about food.

Braintree, MA (November 16, 2009) -  NuVal’s campaign to help people eat better through a
revolutionary food scoring system will now enter the great state of Texas, as NuVal announced a new
partnership with Lubbock-based United Supermarkets, LLC. United operates 50 stores under the United
Supermarkets, Market Street, and Amigos United banners.

NuVal’s scoring system gives all food a score from 1 to 100; the higher the score, the higher the
nutrition. All NuVal scores are provided on the supermarket shelf, making it easy for consumers to
compare the overall nutrition of the foods they buy at a glance.

United Supermarkets plans to launch NuVal in six of its Market Street stores in the Dallas/Fort Worth
area in March 2010, then roll it out to the remainder of its stores later in the year. With this partnership,
the NuVal Nutritional Scoring System will be available in more than 575 supermarkets in 19 states across
the U.S., with more scheduled for 2010. In addition to United Supermarkets, NuVal Scores are currently
available in Price Chopper, Hy-Vee, and Meijer supermarkets.

“We’re thrilled to work with United Supermarkets, as they have raised the industry standard in service
and innovation,” said NuVal President Nancy McDermott. “We’re proud to be a part of their effort to
enhance the shopping experience.”

Almost one million customers (or “guests” as United calls them) shop at United Supermarket stores each
week. Since its inception in 1916, United Supermarkets stores have stood for quality, value, guest
service and community involvement.

After the NuVal launch, United guests will see thousands of trademark NuVal blue hexagons, which
contain NuVal Scores, on shelf tags throughout the store. Scored categories include meat, seafood,
poultry, salty snacks, milk, yogurt, vegetables (fresh, frozen and canned), cereal, bread, cookies, soft
drinks, and crackers, among others. Ultimately, NuVal will guide U.S. consumers in all food categories.

“Using NuVal, our guests will have access to an easy and reliable way to determine the most nutritious
items in our stores,” said Alicia Brown, MS, RD, CSSD, LD, United’s health and wellness marketing
manager. “No matter what they’re buying, they will have a way to instantly determine the most
nutritious foods, whether it’s in pasta or pizza.”

Using the NuVal system, United guests will:

• Easily discover the more nutritious products in a store. Consumers wanting to know what
cereals (or crackers or cookies) have more nutrition only need to take a look at the NuVal scores
and choose the product with the higher number.

• Be able to “act like an expert,” using the knowledge and research of more than a dozen of the
country’s best nutrition experts, who spent two years creating the ONQI (Overall Nutritional
Quality Index), the scientific engine used to determine NuVal scores.

• Get more nutrition for their budget, as they can now compare items side-to-side and determine
which product offers the better value, not just in price, but in nutrition as well. For instance,
consumers may find that some varieties of frozen or canned vegetables score the same as fresh
produce on the NuVal scale.

• Be able to better compare name brand to store brand products. In many instances, consumers
will learn that a store’s private label item is just as nutritious as the more expensive national
one.

Adopting the NuVal system is the latest way United is promoting a more nutritious lifestyle for its
Guests. Earlier this year, United became one of the founding members of the Healthy Weight
Commitment Foundation, whose stated mission is to reduce obesity by 2015.

“While there are many options in nutrition labeling, we feel that NuVal offers the most robust system
available,” said United CEO Dan Sanders. “Furthermore, they operate without the influence of food
manufacturers, meaning this is a system our guests can depend on.”

About NuVal:

The NuVal Nutritional Scoring System is powered by the Overall Nutritional Quality Index (ONQI™), a
patent-pending algorithm for measuring the nutritional quality of foods and beverages. Developed by an
independent team of top nutrition and public health experts, the NuVal System scores foods and
beverages based on more than 30 different nutrients and nutrition factors – everything from fiber and
vitamins to fat and sodium. Visitors to the NuVal website (www.nuval.com) can find sample scores in a
variety of categories. The ONQI algorithm was created independent of financing and influence from food
and beverage manufacturers.

NuVal Scores can be found in participating grocery stores, where they are posted on shelf tags next to
the product price and on in-store signage. In addition to United, Price Chopper, Hy-Vee and Meijer, more
leading U.S. retail chains will introduce the system to their customers in 2010. NuVal is a joint venture
formed in 2008 by Topco Associates, LLC, and Griffin Hospital of Derby, Conn., a non-profit community
hospital and home to the Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center.
